14 ENTER THE BARDO

2019

3D Art film
5min 22sec

* Enter The Bardo was exhibited in Whitenoise Gallery in 2018 and published in Heavy magazine.

Millennials so easily, so frequently cross back and forth between life and death online. Their Internet identities are so easily created and removed. They can also kill and be killed playing online games. If this goes further, in the future, we may even be saving the data of a human’s body and memories online and be constructing a same being based on them. The audience of this work is given the opportunity to experience the process between life and death in the form of a game simulation so that they can ponder on the meaning of life and death.

The online space where death and birth coexist is just like bardo—the state of existence between death and reincarnation as Buddhism describes. I reinterpreted the experience in the state of bardo as depicted in the Bardo Thodol to build the virtual 3D bardo environment. From the perspective of the dead, the audience experiences bardo in the form of a game simulation.
